Welcome to the Home & Away Dining Society

Posted by: webmaster on Monday February 16, 2009 (15:13:49)
Welcome to the Home & Away Dining Society. This society is for those who a) like to meet people, both new and old and b) like to eat out. If you fit into that category then you are welcome to join in!

Each month the Home & Away Dining Society tries to get together to enjoy a meal. We attempt to alternate; one month at 'home', in and around Chantilly and Senlis, and the next month 'away' in Paris. It's a great excuse to get out to a nice restaurant, and every other month to actually get to somewhere further afield.

The organiser each month (and please do let me know if you'd be happy to organise something) will get in touch with their chosen restaurant and arrange a fixed price menu including wine that we can all enjoy. Generally we look to keep the 'Home' fixtures down to around €40 whilst in Paris this is more like €50. We can normally minimise the amount of cars needed too by sharing (and we may even be able to organise a minibus should numbers warrant it).

After each dinner the organiser then adds a review to the restaurant review section of this website. We hope that eventually, given the number (and quality!) of reviews that we can use this as a bargaining tool to get better deals in the restaurants!

If you are interested in being kept in touch with the Home & Away Dining Society please click on the 'Mailing Lists' link at the foot of the community section of the menu on the left and join the Home & Away mailing list.

So we look forward to seeing you on one of our nights out - or even hearing from you if you have a restaurant you'd like to recommend so we can try it.

Home & Away - the return!

Posted by: webmaster on Wednesday May 03, 2017 (10:24:26)
Home & Away to make a comeback?

It's been a long time since our last Home & Away outing and many of our regulars have moved on and left the area, such is the transient nature of an expatriate community. Home & Away was a great way for people of all ages and from all walks of life to meet fellow expatriates in the area. Indeed many lasting friendships were made after a first meeting at one of our dinners. We've noticed there a large number of people moving into the area who are maybe looking to meet new people, so maybe Home & Away could help?

I'd like to gauge interest on holding a Home & Away dinner on a date to be confirmed, possibly Saturday May 27th - now Saturday June 10th. The venue is to be confirmed but it'll be a restaurant in or around Chantilly and will be a sit down meal with wine, hopefully for around 40€ a head. The idea is that we can encourage a mix of new arrivals in the area with those of us who've lived here a while so you can see old friends and meet new people!

I've sent an email to everyone on our mailing lists - if you didn't register for the Home & Away list but would like to receive updates please manage your subscription using the link in the menu to the left. If you're not on the Home & Away mailing list you'll not receive any more updates about this dinner. If you have friends or contacts who might be interested but might not be on the mailing list please tell them about it. The more the merrier!

If you'd like to come on the 10th, or possibly on another date please email me as soon as possible using the link below with how many you'll be. If we can get sufficient numbers I'll go ahead and get organising!

Home & Away - November 2012

Posted by: webmaster on Tuesday October 16, 2012 (14:28:41)
Thanks to all those who came along to the Home & Away dinner in Heilles - I've written a review of the evening here; do have a look and feel free to comment on it if you agree or disagree.

Our next event is slightly different. It will be 'home' event; that is held in someone's home. The format though will be slightly different. Jo and Lee Pretsell have very kindly agreed to open up their house again for us for an evening (they have moved since the last time they did this so we could say it's somewhere new). However, we will be using this opportunity to raise some money. Jo, for reasons known only to herself, has managed to get herself a place at the 2013 London Marathon. She will be raising money for the GET KIDS GOING charity. They fund disabled children upto the age of 26 years to enable them to particpate and compete in sports. Her place is conditional on raising £2000. So our meal at Jo's will take the following format:

Jo and Lee will supply curries for everyone along with some accompaniements like naans and poppadoms. Everyone coming needs to bring either a starter, accompaniement or dessert, enough for around a minimum of 5 people. Most importantly they also need to bring anything they would like to drink, be it wine or beer or whatever. The cost will be 20€ per person, ie half what we would normally pay for a night out. All profits from the evening will go directly to Jo's charity to help her reach her target.

The date of the dinner is Saturday November 17th, from 20h. Please could you let me or Jo know, by reply or by emailing Jo direct at leeandjopretsell@hotmail.com whether you'll be coming and what you might like to bring. Hopefully if all of our regulars can make it we can go a long way to getting Jo up to her target and beyond.
If you'd to give now, or can't make the dinner but would like to donate anyway, please visit Jo's charity page here.

Home & Away - it's back!

Posted by: webmaster on Friday September 21, 2012 (17:56:39)
Auberge Des Tilleuls
It's been a while but Home & Away is back! Our last get together was before the summer holidays which seems like such a long time ago. Our next dinner is planned for October 13th, at the Auberge Des Tilleuls in Heilles, around 30 minutes to the north west of Chantilly. The young chef, Charles-Édouard specialises in local cuisine and is getting quite a name for himself.

To those unaware of what Home & Away is, it is a group of people who enjoy two things; eating out and meeting people. By arranging set price dinners in local restaurants, and arranging pot-luck dinners in people's houses it provides a great opportunity to get together with old friends, and to make new ones. We regularly have between 10 and 20 people at each dinner, although we have been up to 40 before!

So to return to our next get together, October 13th at the Auberge des Tilleuls. Read more for the menu:    more ...

Thoughts are turning to the Home & Away Christmas Dinner, which, this year, will take place at the Chateau de Raray, 25 minutes northeast of Chantilly, on Saturday December 10th. Many thanks to Annie Marsh for making all the arrangements!

Who's invited? Everyone! Home & Away dinners are a great way to catch up with friends, and to make new ones. Just moved to the area? Perfect! Come along and meet people. The Home & Away diners are just people living in the area who enjoying good food, good wine and good company.

We are also planning a November get together for anyone who just can't wait until December! Details still need to be confirmed but this will follow the usual format of up to 40€ a head for your meal and drinks, and will be held at Le Relais du Bois St Dennis in Chantilly on November 19th. Home & Away - May 2011

Posted by: webmaster on Thursday April 14, 2011 (21:24:50)
Bistro des deux Theatres
I've just heard that we have a restaurant for our next Home & Away dinner, now to be held on May 21st, in Paris. It is the Bistro des deux Theatres in the 9th (Pigalle) - see reviews here. The restaurant offers a welcome drink, three course menu with wine and coffee, and all for 39€, which is a great price for Paris. It's also very easy to reach, being not far from the end of the A1, so we don't even have to run the gauntlet of the Perépherique!

Many thanks to Sarah and Olivier who have made the booking. They've allowed us up to 20 places, which would only mean 4 cars if we all shared transport. They've also got assurances that we won't be turfed out when the theatres kick out - which is good to know! The menu will follow probably a little nearer the time, and we'll have a choice of two per course. So do let me know ASAP if you'd like to come, and get those babysitters booked!

Latest review and news for May and June 2011

Posted by: webmaster on Friday April 08, 2011 (15:23:24)
I've just posted a review of our dinner at Le Karément in Chantilly from last month, which you can find in the usual place here. You'll notice the overall tone is a very positive one as I personally, and feedback generally indicated that the food was some of the best we've had. If you disagree, post a comment on the review!

We'll be giving April a miss because of the school holidays and Easter, but hopefully we'll be able to arrange something for May. This will be an 'away' dinner, and I do think it's about time we ventured back into Paris, especially now that the weather is improving again. We're looking at May 14th, so if anyone has a restaurant that they would like to recommend, preferably in Paris, although if you have one somewhere that is not in Chantilly or Senlis, then please get in touch. Organising basically means you need to contact the restaurant and select the menu, and write the review afterward. We do all the hard work in getting in touch with everyone, getting numbers and menu choices etc. We normally look for a fixed menu of up to 50€ if we're in Paris, or 40€ elsewhere, so go on, share your favourite restaurant with the rest of us!

June will be slightly different in that we thought we'd do a Home & Away picnic. Chantilly has very kindly decided to lay on some fireworks for us (see here for details) on Saturday 18th June. So the plan would be to all get together for a picnic, with everyone supplying something, before the fireworks start, and then watching the fireworks together. This year seems a little different from other years in that the non-seated viewing area is on the Vineuil side of the canal, which makes it a little difficult to picnic in the car park and then only walk in for those who want to pay the entrance, with the rest staying in the car park, so probably the best bet would be to buy tickets and picnic on the grass by the canal itself. Tickets for this are 18€ for adults and 5€ for the under 12s so 46€ for a family of four. I do think we could have a very enjoyable evening so please let me know if you intend to come along, and when you've bought your tickets.

That's it for now - we hope to see you in May, and in June!

Home & Away 2010 - and the New Year

Posted by: webmaster on Tuesday December 21, 2010 (15:42:20)
Home & Away Christmas 2010
Whilst we all suffer the effects of the inclement weather and wonder if we'll get home for Christmas or whether our loved ones will reach us it's a great time to look back over the last year and look forward to the next.

We haven't managed a dinner every single month but we have managed 5 this year, with a very good turn out to each one. Probably with the current economic climate every other month on average is a good thing to aim for. We visited three restaurants, all of which got pretty good reviews as well as the first real 'home' Home & Away dinner at our home. We'd like to make this a regular thing in the summer - it doesn't involve a great deal of work as everyone brings a dish so if you'd like to host one let me know. Finally we had another successful and well-attended Christmas Dinner, once again at the Chateau de la Tour in Gouvieux.

This year, with the numbers involved we were lucky enough to book a downstairs room, which was a lot bigger than
the Salle Pauline we had last year. Being downstairs also meant we had room to mingle before hand whilst cocktails were served, and room to dance afterwards! There was perhaps a little less ambiance than the smaller room upstairs but I think we managed to create our our pretty well once we got going!    more ...

We are also well on our way to finalising numbers for our Christmas dinner - to be held at the same venue as last year, the Chateau de la Tour (see the review here). If you are planning on coming along and you haven't been in touch please email me webmaster@chantillyexpat.com as soon as possible as numbers are limited. The cost will be €65 a head and we need a €25 a head deposit to confirm your place. The menu will be finalised this week.

October Home & Away

Posted by: webmaster on Tuesday October 05, 2010 (08:21:59)
Autumn has definitely arrived and everyone is getting back to the routine of dark, early mornings, kids to school and work. We were very lucky with the weather for our 'pot luck' dinner in September - thinking back now sitting outside until 3am doesn't seem possible only a couple of weeks ago! I hope all who came enjoyed themselves, it's certainly something we'll consider doing again if anyone is interested, especially if anyone else fancies hosting one!

Our next dinner is due to be a 'home' fixture which Julie Shaw has very kindly agreed to arrange for us. She has made a booking at 'Les Grand Pres' which can be found just outside Chantilly in Avilly St.Leonard on Saturday October 16th. As ever the offer is for a 3 course meal with welcome apero and coffee for €40 a head, and Julie has done wonders in arranging 'unlimited' wine to go with the meal. This is an offer restaurants only ever seem to offer once to H&A diners!

We do need to know numbers as soon as possible. So please could you check your diaries and email me as soon as you can if you'd like to attend. There should be enough space for everyone but in case there isn't it will have to be first come first served.

November will be 'away' so if anyone has a restaurant they can recommend and would like to help organise please do let me know. Our annual Christmas dinner will be next - due to be held on either the 4th or 11th December (to be confirmed). Do make sure you get your babysitters on standby!

Look forward to seeing you then.
