Among those whom I like or admire, I can find no common denominator, but among those whom I love, I can: all of them make me laugh.

CCC vs Aulnay

Posted by: webmaster on Saturday June 14, 2014 (13:19:34)   (3803 Reads)

Chantilly’s 3rd game of 2014 was against Aulnay who firstly needed to be coerced into starting the game in the afternoon – they would play all day given the chance. The original plan was to play 40 overs, but a later start and the forecast of brief but squally showers led us to plump for 30.

In our search for new, young stars of the future, a big CCC welcome to Dominic Andrews. He contacted the club on a whim on the Tuesday and found himself in the 1st XI on the Sunday. To other potential 1st XI players out there, “your whims could come true, too – get in touch”.

Chantilly won the toss and decided to bat, opening with Matt Baldwin, of Embassy fame, and Rob Oakley. Baldwin gave himself a bit too much room to a straight one with the score on 14 and Kalim Fazal came to the crease. He didn’t last long either unfortunately – also bowled, which brought in new boy Andrews (who last picked up a bat “a long time ago”). The following stand of 39 with Oakley brought some stability and respectability to the innings.

A devastating first over by Franc triggered a mid-order crisis with Patriva, Hollins and Ripoche all out for ducks but Denzil Homer picked up some much needed runs later in the innings with 9 not out. Together with Jimmy Regan (7), they put on 23 for the 8th wicket.

Those with the misfortune of having good memories will recall games against Aulnay last year where we struggled to get out of the 50s. We weren’t exactly taking this game out of their reach but we were making a mildly defendable total.

All 11 Aulnay players had a bowl, none of them badly, to give them credit, although wides had a very successful day, bringing in another 24 towards Chantilly’s total of 91 for 9.
At the interval, the rain stayed mainly on the plain for long enough to enjoy a cup of tea and Denzil’s strawberry cake which is an early contender for cake of the year. The chocolate cake looked good too but didn’t last long enough for me to have a taste.

On to Aulnay’s innings: The first wicket to go down was Arand’s with a superbly taken catch by Matt Baldwin at point off the bowling of Fazal. And when, a few balls later, the other opener Siva was out for 2 it looked as if the game could turn our way.

We came off the field for the rain 2 or 3 times in the end, to sit in our cars and wait for it to pass. With the wind, the pitch dried out quickly. Rain would not save Chantilly’s day today...
Albin got his head down top-scoring with 25, and with Arum and Mohan, put together most of the required remaining runs – in pretty quick time too. 2 early wickets each were taken by Robin Richardson and Kalim Fazal, who have both started their seasons in excellent form.

Then, just as Aulnay were getting close to the target, they wavered again losing a couple of quick wickets. Both Regan and Rob Oakley picked up a couple of catches each, Regan also taking the last 3 wickets, but this couldn’t prevent Aulnay making the required 92 runs in a little less than 20 overs.
So Aulnay won, but losing 7 wickets along the way. The game was tighter than we might have expected when pointlessly debating whether to take 2nd piece of cake. In the end, we were left with a familiar post-match feeling… if only Chantilly had scored 20 or 30 more runs. Better luck next week at Thoiry?
