End of year report - 2008

As I sit here in my thermal vest, coughing onto the screen, it’s fairly clear that the end of season is here – and quicker than I had been planning. And although we moaned about it occasionally, the weather was kind: no game was called off, and I can’t remember a Friday evening being cancelled either.
So was it a successful year?
You might be disappointed to hear that we had 8 games, with 3 wins and 5 losses, and then be surprised to hear that it ranks as the most successful year ever for the club. But let’s not get hung up on statistics; the games were jolly good fun and if you’ll permit me some poetic licence…

Tris’ old club was the first of the year,
The 50 by Jones deserved a cold beer,
We thought that to give them 2 innings was nice,
And jumped on the chance and bowled them out twice. (note 1)

Thoiry was a good game – one of the best,
Apart for Adrian down in the nets,
The scores were tight – could’ve gone either way,
But Chantilly squeaked it at the end of the day.

The Standard side was one team of four,
And 20-20s, it seemed, they’d played before,
Their batsmen made runs; their bowlers were in heaven,
- They rattled us out for a mere 77.

New Zealanders came to try out their luck,
So we pulled in Glenn Campbell to even things up,
Gillette’s bowling and catching was a thing to behold,
At least for some of us who are getting a bit old.

The Nomads came back and played some good shots,
Only Nick Shepherd was there to hold back the rot.
Catches win matches, that’s what they say,
But not all the time, not on this day.

Lille came to Apremont full of high hopes,
But in a short while they were back on the ropes,
Their batting stalled, and then when they fielded,
A 50 from Clarke was just what we needed. (note 2)

The Accies from Glasgow were plenty of fun,
But how did they score so many runs?
We left the field limping and broken,
Scoring half their runs was a bit of a token. (note 3)

Against Standard again, our youth stood tall,
And Adrian Powell smacked the ball,
We lost the game, but relaxed with a beer,
For our first away game and last of the year.

8 games, 3 wins – could’ve been worse,
Just think of the good bits and next May the 1st.

So in a year in which we had so many players on the potentially available list, where did it all go wrong? Injuries, ah yes… let’s have a light-hearted look back at some of the best of them:

• Adrian Powell – thumb broken in 71 places
• Patrick Clarke – broken wrist (impressive, but not done playing cricket, so fewer points I’m afraid)
• Matt Gillette – broken collar bone (this really counts as the best injury whilst actually playing in a game, well done)
• Nick Jones – tendonitis in all moving parts
• Michiel Kerkoven – badly twisted knee shortly before submitting his membership form (you must work on that timing)
• Max Shepherd – Most things, preferably involving crutches
• Chris Curtis / Glenn Campbell / probably others – Couldn’t move the next day
• Nicolas Pellicer – Sprained wrist (again fewer points – not sustained through cricket)
• Nick Shepherd – Torn shoulder muscle (“torn” sounds much better than “pulled”)
• Jack Oakley – Sore feet, again
• Charlie Hedley – Sore leg, typically coming on after 4.5 overs, or just before batting
• Simon Hedley – Broken finger playing rugby during the cricket season – no sympathy, sorry.

Which, on a good note, led to most players getting a game.

Moving on: Assuming we find a date that suits, I’m looking forward to an end-of-year get together.

It is traditional (since last year anyway) to present awards for notable achievements. I had a sneak preview of the statistics for this year, being put together by Nick Shepherd. Unsurprisingly, one might think, the person responsible for putting these figures together comes out rather well in most categories…

Of course, not all awards are of the “best performance” ilk and it is possible that some of the more bizarre or embarrassing events have slipped my mind. Any information that you wish to pass on to me will be taken in confidence and please remember that only a passing semblance to the truth is necessary.

See you soon,

Rob

Note 1: Tris’ old club practised before the game – we should learn from this.
Note 2: Mrs Oakley reckons with rhyming like this I should get into CM2.
Note 3: This sounds quite negative which shouldn’t be misunderstood. For some reason, we seem to enjoy heavy defeats just as much as victories.
