CCC vs Lisse (part 2)

Posted by: webmaster on Thursday July 21, 2011 (12:36:59)   (4723 Reads)

By July, the exceptional spring had degenerated into cool, windy and wet weather . The Saturday had been a washout and Sunday afternoon was forecast for rain - just as well those keen Lisses chaps wanted to play in the morning.

Lisses won on their previous visit to Chantilly back in June, chasing CCC's total over 25 overs. As last time, Chantilly won the toss and elected to bat first. Same format, same result?

Without the 2 regular openers of Pretsell and Sansbury, Eddie Hoyle and Rob Oakley started off the innings for Chantilly. The Lisses bowling was relatively tight but 3 or 4 runs were squeezed out of every over. They saw off the opening bowlers and then accelerated the run rate until Oakley was clean bowled by Balagi for 32.

Patrick "Hammy" Heard came in and helped push things along to 86 before he was run out - or his runner was run out - for 5.

Chantilly's foreign import Patrick Clarke then came to the crease; the team looking on, hoping for a typical smash and grab raid on the bowling. Clarke lost his way early on with a couple of forward defensives, but calmed things down with some 4's and 6's (one into a large puddle, just to irritate the bowler). He was finally bowled for 40 on the first ball of the last over.

And all this time Hoyle was keeping the ship steady, working his way to a deserved 50. But could he get there? Those on the sidelines all thought he had, when he nudged the last ball of the innings to leg. However, the signal from umpire Shepherd indicated that the ball hadn't come off the bat and the scorebook had to be corrected to record a worthy, but cheaper, 49 not out.

Chantilly had amassed 159 for 3 - more than 6 an over. Could they apply the required pressure to keep the Lisses run rate down?

Hoyle and Richardson opened up against Lisses captain Jayachandran and Sriam, the latter falling to an outside edge coolly taken by Heard in first slip, off the bowling of Hoyle.

These first overs went as well as Chantilly could have hoped with Lisses struggling to get any runs away, against tight bowling and lively fielding from Chantilly.

7 overs gone and the 2nd wicket fell for only 12 runs. Importantly, it should be noted that this was Jack Oakley's first catch for the club, well watched and taken, as the ball looped off the shoulder of Aruen's bat.

Next in was Patrick, which caused some confusion with Sue the scorer as he was being bowled at by Patrick Heard and Patrick Clarke… But he proved he had a good eye for the ball when he launched a 6 off Heard (incidentally into the same puddle that Patrick Clarke had picked out earlier - and it was Clarke who has to pick it out...) Anyway, runs still didn't flow and the run rate increased inexorably.

After 17 overs it was time to bring on the big guns of Congreve and Powell (Did I really write that…?) Their contribution of 4 wickets from 5 overs put a seal on the game. Clarke and Richardson came on to rub the visitors' noses in it at the end and Chantilly came away with an emphatic 73 run victory.

This Chantilly win made it 3 in a row - a relief after a poor start to the season. It was all the better for the endeavour and effort expended with bat and ball. As we take a few weeks off for a mid-summer break, it was a game and result to be savoured. Man of the match was undoubtedly Eddie who, as well getting more-or-less 50, also only gave away 5 runs off his 5 overs for 1 wicket. Well done guys, all of you.
